Sometimes when we get stressed or our jobs cause us to work unusual schedules, we sometimes need to learn to sleep at night again. Your host the night owl sometimes stays up too late and then before you know it is 3 am and I have to get up at 7 am. It’s not that I have trouble sleeping at night, I just don’t go to bed. I stay up usually because I am involved in what I am doing and it’s usually quiet and peaceful so I like that time very much. But I pay for it in the morning.

Because I am so tired when I go to bed, I usually always get a good night sleep, or I mean, good nights sleep. (I never understood why they make it plural because you only sleep one night at a time. So, because of that, you should always go to bed when you are tired. I’ve never believed in going to bed at a certain time, I think it’s better to make sure that you wake up at a certain time.

But if you want to learn how to get a good night sleep, the first thing I would do three things:

  1. Do not take naps during the day. Resist the temptation to fall asleep during the day. If you have a problem dozing off because you are at home and you are just bored, then what I would do is leave the house to remove the temptation.
  2. Only use the bed for sleeping and that other activity we do in bed sometimes.
  3. Set a predetermined wake up time and go to bed when you are tired.

To me this is the best way to learn how to sleep better at night. The only problem in this plan is the execution of it. Sometimes, I find it hard to set a specific wake up time. The way that I have tackled that problem is by scheduling an appointment that I have to get up for. When I do that, I tend to get up and stay up. If I don’t have anything specific going on, I’ll tend to sleep in.

The other problem I have is that around the late afternoon or after I eat, I want to take a nap. It’s a hard habit to break In fact, I took a nap tonight. If you find your self doing that, what I would do is start trying to take shorter naps until you wean yourself off of it.

The main thing is, don’t be to rough on yourself and keep trying to improve your sleep each day by a little bit.
